When foot off accelerator, run down lumpy

If I was to accelerate and then lift off the pedal the car jerks and isn't very smooth as it runs down. Like the car is fighting the engine as it wont let it run smoothly as it slows down.
Anybody know what I mean? Hard to explain but would be so easy to show.
if somebody does know what i mean any idea what this is and what i could do to lessen it? Or is it just a thing with a mk2 golf?

Would do a search but hell if I know what id search for :S

Does it pop and bang and slightly backfire? What engine do you have?

my digi does this,hopefully check timing tomorow.

Its a 1.8 8v digi. Doesnt pop and bang at all. Just its not very smooth at all. Say im in traffic and i accelerate abit in 1st then ease off its terrible
