Car Pulls to the left
« on: 30 July 2003, 16:58 »
Hope someone can help!

My car has always pulled to the left slightly but i thought it was down to the worn suspension. I have just recently given the car a whole new suspension overhaul, i have fitted Koni damping adjustable shocks with new G60 top mounts.
The tracking has been done and all the wishbone bushes replaced.
The only thing i haven't replaced is the springs.
The car has 30mm lowering springs that have been on the car a while so these are the only things i can think of that are causing the problem.
When the brakes are applied it brakes in a straight line.
The car has never been crashed as far as i am aware either.

Anything else i should think of?

Its a 91 gti8v btw.

Thanks guys.

most cars pull to the left slightly as the camber of the road drags you that way, the best way to check if it is this is to find an empty road and try driving on the wrong side, if it pulls the other way thats your problem (or spank over to the continent and do an extended test!)

now i come to think of it, when the old suspension was on the car, it sat slightly lower on the left hand side (passenger).
Could the springs on this side have been compressed and stayed this way?
It does also seem more willing to corner whilst steering right!

I don't really want to spend more money on springs unless i have to! ;)

I had it done at a place that uses computer alignment, he showed me the print out of before and after. The before picture showed the tracking was out but the after picture showed it was all in line!
I thought this metod was quite reliable?

Try swapping the wheels around, the tyres could de slightly out of shape due to a earlier fault. Steve.

Check your tyre pressure, after fitting new struts to my car I had my camber and tracking checked as my car started pulling to the left, whilst getting my tracking checked I was told that my camber on the left side was way out, had this set up and since no pulling. (but this is the least of my probs at the mo).

Regards.

I have just swapped the front wheels with the back wheels and this seems to have made a difference! It is not so noticable now!
I noticed that the tyre on the passenger didn't have as much tread as the drivers side, could this really have made a difference?

Have seen and fitted cars with new tyres and had "pulling issues", changed them about, and it has made a big difference. Are all tyres the same rolling radius? does the internal construction differ between makes? and does it make a difference? Racing teams seem to take a lot of time and trouble with there tyres. I know its not the same, but we drive the cars for thousands of miles, on lots of different surfaces and get used to how it "feels". Just my views, Steve. ;)

I have got Yokohama 195 50 15's (AVS Sport), very grippy tyre btw, on the front which are brand new and the same size and make tyre on the back, the back ones are A520s.
