Mudflaps...
« on: 03 February 2010, 20:10 »
Having done a long journey today in the rain & snow, I'm surprised at just how much crap gets thrown up onto the rear of the car from the rear tyres...so, I'm considering getting some mudflaps fitted. Is it worth it, do they reduce the amount of stuff thrown up onto the rear window etc?

Thanks

not sure they stop the back getting so dirty (my mk5 was as bad) ...but the fronts are doing a good job of protecting the doors from chips...I didn't have flaps on the mk5 and found the front doors got peppered

Mudflaps will make little to no difference to the dirt collecting on the back - it's down to the aerodynamics of the car. But front ones will protect your paintwork. I use clear protection film on the lower half of the doors on my cars because I don't like mudflaps.

I have mudflaps fitted to both front and back. I would say they have been invaluable in the recent weather in protecting the paintwork on the side of the car. As mac7 say's the dirt on the back of the car is down to the aerodynamics.

It's a self adhesive polyurethane film about 0.3mm thick which resists small stone chips. There are companies that make custom laser-cut kits for various car bumpers and bonnets. VW used small 'panels' of it on various models over the years to protect rear wheel arches (Mk2 Golf Rallye and B5.5 Passat come to mind) and in recent years offered dealer-fit front end protection kits.

I've been using it since the late 1980's on cars with wide wheels. The early stuff used to gradually yellow over a few years but they've improved it since then. Most recently I used some made by 3M, PU5025.

If you google 'paint protection film' you should get some useful contacts, or one of those companies that does car vinyl wrapping or sign writing should be able to help.

Am I right in saying that the mudflaps for the GTI have to have their wheels removed so that they can be fitted ?
