Update on this problem, I took it into the garage today and it was the timing belt tensioner that was making the noise, thanks to Rich for another expert diagnosis, much appreciated.
Had this changed and they also changed the timing belt, cost me a reasonable ?112 all in parts and labour. For the record, my timing belt was changed in January this year but the tensioner wasn't, my tip of the day is to get this changed whenever changing the timing belt as the tensioner wheel was only ?25 from VW stealership and when changing the timing belt all the labour has already been done.
