40k mile service inspection
« on: 02 February 2010, 19:02 »
Hi all

I'm on the long life service regime and i've got c2k miles left before the next service is due (car is on approx 44k miles). Called a VW dealer for a price and was quoted £220 for the service inspection (oil & filter plus pollen filter plus their "inspection"). For some reason I thought plugs were also due but apparently not.

Anyway, does £220 sound about right? and are they the correct service items for the c40k miles inspection service?

Cheers

P.S. Also asked about cambelt change - they told me 6 years or 120,000 miles so I mentioned that VW has reduced that to 4 years or 60,000 miles which she said was news to her!

Camblet was £295 (normally £485) and if i wanted the water pump it was another £130 on top of the £295.

Sorry, don't know if that is a good price or not as I drive a soot chucker. However, I can't beleive they want £130 extra to fit the water pump at the same time as doing the cambelt. I had mine done by the stealers last year and I asked them to also change the water pump and it only added £62 to the bill (and some of at was coolant) ?

It's funny you say that as I did ask her to break it down as the pump is only a £30ish item. She quoted me £40 for the pump plus VAT plus an extra 30 mins labour plus the replacement of the coolents so tooted it up to £130!

They are having a laugh charging you extra labour for the water pump.

When I asked the dealer they said that it would be about an extra £40 for the pump but no additional labour.

That was a maindealer.

I would agree. I did explain that to her but I suspect she was just reading from the manual in front of her.

I read a thread on a different forum where they were charged a similar amount for the water pump so it seems to be the normal 'computer says' syndrome.  As said its a 2 minute job to change the water pump when the cambelt is already off so bargain it down to a parts only price.

The price for the cambelt is very good.  Non discounted price is about £500 at my stealer and they don't offer this £295 deal that most other stealers are doing..

I paid just under £400 for my 40k service, brake fluid change and air con service last summer.  That service did include the spark plugs being changed so I would check that out further ... Mine is time and distance though.

Thanks for that. The brake fluid was done at the last service so not due until next year. I didn't ask about the A/C but I did ask about the plugs and she said they were duw at 60k miles. Will try another dealer and see what response if get from them! Cambelt won't be due until Sept (car will be 4 years old then) but should have only done c50k miles.

In hindsight don't bother with the A/C service unless its not running as cold as it was.

Our resident service guru T_T advises not to bother with regassing A/c unless it's broke.
IIRC the water pump should be parts only...
The burd at the stealer was probably looking at the price as a stand alone job, not together with the belt.
