I thought there would be some downsides

So i have narrowed it down to the Goodyear F1 Assy's and Vredesteins which are around the same price on Camskill

Don't discount the GSD3s, been running them for 6 years now. Perfect  tyre IMO, although fuel economy has dipped on the Golf after changing them from the God awful Dunlop Sport Maxx

You need a load rating of at least 91 so either should be fine.

^^^^^ Correct. 'W' speed rating is sufficient for a standard GTI, but the tyre must be an eXtra Load tyre.

Equally good, but I'd be tempted to try the Vredestein, myself.

The OE tyres were conti 2's but have moved on to conti sport contact 3's. I think they're a much better tyre in terms of grip. Wear rate is similar and a pair of 18" costs me c£230 fitted.

had conti 3s on my st mondeo. same size as the golf thought they were good all round tyres and i got them fitted for £430 for 4 !    will replace the dunlop on my ed 30 with these when they need replacing.

The opinion of one BMW driver

"I am driving a 2006 BMW 325 with the standard OEM Bridgestone run flat tires. These are simply the worst tires I have ever experienced (I must add that I have had many sets of Bridgestone Turanzas and Potenzas that performed extremely well on other cars). The run flat tires provide a rough jostling ride, do not corner well, and are incredibly noisy on rough pavement. I have only had the car a few weeks but I am going to switch out these tires with something else that will provide ride and handling that is acceptable. Carrying a compact spare and a jack is a small inconvenience compared to riding on this poor excuse for a tire. There is a long way to go on this technology and BMW should not have ruined an otherwise great car with these tires"
 

I think if they are running on the pavement the noise might just not be only from the tyres and the 'roughness' may also go some way to explaining the red splashes up the side of the car!

I tend to prefer keeping the wheels on the road most of the time.

That's written by an american - they often refer to the road surface as pavement.

I guessed so but it didn't stop me having a chuckle at the mental picture of a BMW ploughing down screaming pedestrians whilst the driver complained about the chatter from the tyres

Well yeah - BMW drivers are usually oblivious to other road users through their arrogance

Anyway, I am looking at 4x of the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta based on the recommendation of you guys, what sizes do I need for the 18" monza2 wheels?
