Paintjob showing its age
« on: 30 January 2010, 21:23 »
Right.

The golf has been in the garage for the past 6 months cos of the weather and im getting it out this monday. Not something i've just noticed this but it need addressing.

Because of its age the paintjob is not looking very good, still ok but i think over time its lost all its laquer. This becomes apparent should i polish it. Dont do that anymore as it was taking too much off so i normally wax it a couple of times.

Question is. Is there something i can do to replace the laquer layer of sorts? a treatment maybe? Or is it a full respray job?

Thanks for any info,
Rich

if your clearcoat is knackered then you'll be looking at a respray

a respray can vary so much, iv seen people do it for the cheap but then the paint started to peel within a few months, the annoying thing about a respray is you will defiantly lose money as it will never add that much value to your car in comparison with what you pay.

maybe put some pics up of your paintwork and maybe some of the pro detailers could advise you further

From the pics I cannot see any laquer peel, what you have is a classic problem with red VW paint........

The car needs mopping, it will remove all of the fade that you can see, get it done by a proper detailer/valet company, then just keep on top of it with regular waxing and a couple of polishes through the year.

metalics have laquer(clearcote) flat paints dont which leaves them open to the elements more so than metalics.

your car has oxydation which is caused by uv sunlight damage, it breaks the paint down and if left it will eventually pit and allow contaminents to penatrate into the paint which will lead to rusting in the end

as said above you need to get it mopped out, this is done with a rotory machine and a various combo of pads and different grades of polishing compounds which remove the oxydation and make the surface smooth again, then a good sealant should be applyed which has uv inhibitors in it which will prevent this from happening again if kept on top of, sealant protection lasts from as little as 6months or up to 12 depending on the quality of the sealant applyed, then as said above a wax should be applyed to cap it all off so to speak.

if you get it mopped make sure the person doing it knows what he's doing and check out any past jobs if possible as a bandit will almost definatly go through your paint if hes inexperienced with a rotory on this kind of paint finish, your paint will be quite thin in places due to its age now;) and the fact it has no clearcote means caution must be taken when mopping especially on the tops of the wings and all the creeses and edges of each panel, the paint will be at its thinnest in these areas.
