Fanbelt question
« on: 28 October 2004, 17:04 »
I know the answer to this is that the fanbelt probably needs tightening but let me explain........In a morning when I start my car everything is sound, but just lately, dont know if this is down to the wet weather etc but my fanbelt is squealing like a pig, but it only seems to occur when the engine has warmed up after 50 degrees and after about 5 minutes of driving. I've checked it and it does seem to be tight enough by the way but I could be wrong. Anyone reckon it needs tightening or should I just get a new one ?

The only explanation I can think of for it to squeal when the engine is warm is that the belt has probably expanded slightly and so started slipping due to this. Any advice would be great, thanks. ?:) ?

Could just be the wet doing it mate. mine squels like a banshee in the wet so i was just putting belt dressing on it and it cures it for a bit. is the drive surface shiny? if so it should be replaced as it is glazed and is going to squel regardless.

Now then Brad, thanks for the reply, I was wondering if it was the wet that was doing it but again this morning it took about five minutes before it started squealing again. Without sounding too much of a nugget, what's belt dressing ?  ??? I'll check if the belt is glazed but if I remember rightly it's a belt that actually has teeth on it as opposed to being flat, yet the cogs/wheels that it goes round are flat, I'm guessing if this is the right belt then the teeth are supposed to stop the fanbelt squealing.  :)

Change your belt, almost certainly that and they are only 2 or 3 quid so if nothing else you eliminate it as a possible cause.

Might as well do it when you do your timing belt tensioner see your other post about the squealing noise ;)

Hmmm. I'd just change it out mate. Belt dressing is a spray that you can apply to the belts that is suppose to make them run quieter. usually works for a few days tops though. The teeth on it are so it can flex to run over small pully's without binding up. Hope you get it sorted mate. That noise always drives me nuts. lol.

Hi Brad, hope your squealing is not the same problem as me, turns out it was my timing belt tensioner, see this thread for details -

Bloody car. Wailing like a banshee and squealing like a pig all at the same time.
Driving me round the bend >:(

It's just had a new belt fitted when I had it serviced so I don't think its the belt.
Any ideas as to what I can do? :(

the belt usually squeaks from the sideways movement on the pulleys cos the belt is worn out so in the end tightening it wont make it stop squealing
