Factory 2.0 8v?

It reviews vws new mk2 2.0 gti, in RHD no less?

I have never heard of one of these, am i just being stupid/ignorant?

I also found the quote: "...Yet,particulary in the case of Volkswagen, there are still many experts who believe that the original eight-valve Golf is a much more driveable car than the 1.8-litre 16v, which lacks torque..." noteworthy. No wonder so many people think that if 'experts' were spreading that around!

Looks like its from SA as the price is quoted in 'R' (rand?)

Edit: Durr just wikipedia'd apparently NA got the 2.0 revision towards the end. Oh well good read at least!

thats very interesting, I never knew the MK2 8v got a 2.0 8v from factory! nice read too :)
interestingly they mention 2.0 16v over there had cable shifter, even the 2.0 16v in the US kept the rod shifter! must still be a 9a block as they mention it is shorter than the 2.0 8v block. confirms the 2.0 8v fitted was a 2e or based on that block at least.

They also mention the 2.0 16v is from the Passat, so backs up the 9a theory.

The gearbox on the 8v seems to be the 2y going by the ratios.

the us also got 2.0ltr mk2's  in both 8 and 16v.     the 16v's were cis-e ( uber nasty )
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

are you sure about the 2.0 8v, never seen any reference to them? have seen the 2.0 16v tho ya

looking thru etka US section and it only mentions 2.0 9a fitted to the MK2

edit: aha, click in SA section and it tells me the ABA was fitted from 92 on the US models, so maybe last of the US MK2s sneaked in with em fitted!  Strange in the US section it makes no mention of it though :grin:
SA section says 2E got fitted from 91 onwards on zee golf, 92 on for the Vento. seems Jetta missed out on the 2.0 8v

In respect of this bit I was reading a thread on CGTI the other day where there were a couple o fchaps who drive in the Golf GTI Champ and had competed in both the 8v and 16v classes. They were saying that the 16v is the outright faster car but the 8v is the better car to drive on track due to the way it delivers it's power.

Strange but true!
