High mileage gti, Is DSG a wise choice?

I'm on the hunt for a gti at the moment, However I want to get a high spec car with xenon's, nav, leather, dsg, sunroof, mfsw etc.
This spec is quite rare but my budget will probably only allow me to get an '05 car.
Most of the car's I'm interested in looking at have between 60k-80k miles, I know this is not big, but it will increase rapidly through my ownership.
I've had 2 dsg gti's before, one had 24k the other 41k and never had any problems, although I don't want to get stung with a troublesome and potentially expensive to maintain high mileage car, so would I be better going for a manual gearbox?
I much prefer Dsg, but if it's going to be trouble I think I'll give it a miss!!
Anybody had any experience of Dsg with circa 100k miles?
I drove an '05 gti on saturday with 100k and the gearbox was terrible, horrible clunking when starting off in both forward and reverse! If they all get like that at high miles, I'll forget about Dsg!

No worries with the DSG as long as it has had the proper oil changes at the right intervals and the previous owner didn't abuse the launch control all day. Lots of US mk5s with 100k+ miles running fine.
I spotted that you are in Ireland too, are you going to the UK for the car? If not it would probably be worthwhile to take a look, even if it's just up north, since the mk5 seems ot be really overpriced here compared to the UK, especially with the spec you are looking for.

I'd go for a lower miler and ensure the dsg service was completed to schedule. Vw USA have a 10 year warranty, hopefully they'll extend to Europe some day. However, the servicing will need to be adhered to to stand any chance of good will should the worst happen.

Personally i'd go for a manual but id you really want DSG then why not just take out a good warranty?

What is your budget?

I have a 55 plate manual, fully loaded (satnav, xenons, leather, highline, etc) - 17" wheels, NO msfw. 69k miles, just had major service and the cambelt was done 3 months ago. Might be selling in the next month or so.....

If I was buying a car at that sort of mileage, I would go for manual to be honest. The price of fixing DSG out of warranty is excessive and a more specialised task than fixing a manual.

If you must go DSG then as per a previous post, buy a good warranty and check the small print.
