Noisy DSG Looks like a new Gearbox
« on: 25 January 2010, 12:34 »
Hi All

I have noticed over the last few days when pulling away the car sounds like a Metro very loud whine coming from the Gearbox.

Just taken it to the dealer they say it sound's like one of the bearings in the gearbox has gone, only thing is they cant replace bearings only complete gearbox.

1. Has anyone else had this problem
2. Has anyone had a replacement DSG, if so how much

Unfortunately the car is out of warranty so there could be a bit of a disagreement coming up.

Cheers

Simon

Take it to a specialist, bearing are bearings afterall!

It will be cheaper than a new g/box for sure, unless you can haggle with vw customer services and get some goodwill.

Sounds ridiculous. If its a seperate part then it can be replaced. If it makes up a larger part then replace the larger part.

I doubt you will need a whole gearbox. I'd seek help from an independent as VW seem to have their trained chimps out in force lately.

Good luck though

From what I've heard VW dealers are not willing to split the DSG box and work in the innards. They either raplce the whole unit or leave you to go the route of taking it to a specialist to get it repaired.

Good luck with it.

There are now quite a few DSG boxes floating about. There is even one for sale on another forum with a quaife and REVO software on it for £1k.

The bearings are SKF taper bearings. I had my DSG split open when the Quaife was fitted. The work is quite labour intensive though for just a bearing and would be at least a full days work and would include a full drain of the box, which would be another £80 just for the oil and then you have the seal and filter. All in you are talking around £400+ in labour and a total of between £500 to £600 for the work to be completed. Swapping a box over is much easier and can be done in less than half a day. What you also have to consider is whether or not the dealer is right in his diagnosis. It maybe that a gear is on the way out or that the bearing has damaged something else in failing - you just don't know without cracking it open. The question is threefold.....

1. Do you risk opening your existing gearbox with the labour involved in the hope that it is just a bearing
2. Do you buy a secondhand DSG box and hope that it is a good one.
3. Do you cough up a full £3k plus fitting for a brand new DSG box.

If I were in your position I would go for the second option unless you know someone who can do the first option without incurring the labour costs.

There is a fourth option...In the USA they now cover the DSG box for 10yrs or 100k miles due to out of warranty failures. You could ask VWuk to look into your case and ask for a box at reduced cost stating the US as a precedent.

Hi

Thanks for all your help.

I have had the dealer on the phone this morning with a price to install a new Gearbox

Normally the job would be £3720 inc vat .
VW have agreed to pay 40% so the whole Job will be £2232 inc vat

I have told them to go ahead as the idea of trying a second hand one doesn’t appeal and i think would end up as the same price, and there would be no warranty on the work after that.

Told them about 10year USA warranty they had no knowledge of this but then this dealer claims they have never had a Warranty claim on a DSG before only the control board.

Its an 07 with 45k, but it also an import and remapped & on 19" s(if that has an influence on the box?). so they were even less keen to help me out because of this

VW have taken the solid steel Borgwarner DSG and turned it into cheese.
Never did like VW.
