replacing the clutch and gearbox on mk 2 gti
« on: 26 October 2004, 03:21 »
i'm going to end up doing it myself........

first i need to support the engine i only have a big garage trolly jack will this support the engine,
i was think of jacking it on the sump will the sump be ok!
i was thinking of using a bit of wood so the jack dosnt mark the sump!
i have no engine lift stuff! i have jacked it on the gearbox  before but this was when i was doing the front engine mount!

also does a clutch kit come with the pressure plate...if so i will need the plate holding tool...... or a home made bit of metal which will hold the plate while the bolts are undone.....

is it posible to take the flywheel off without needing any daft holding tool!

a lump of wood on the jack under the sump is fine
a clutch kit will come with a pressure plate and a release bearing but you'll need a new end cap for after you've fitted the release bearing

I have never needed any special tools for the job in the 3 golf clutches I've done

i know about the release bearing......... end cap thing.....

the tool i'm on about is to hold the presure plate while the presure plate bolts are being undone.....

otherwise the engine will turn over.........

i may not be getting it done....... as if i'm getting ones from the scrappers jervis said that they will probibly give me one from a maestro and fob me off...........

I just used a big screwdriver to stop the pressure plate spinning

A trolley jack on the sump should be fine. I usually use a combination of trolley jack and lifting hoist. I use the trolley jack on the engine and the hoist just to take the weight of the gearbox - just makes life a bit easier.

For undoing the pressure plate, I made up a tool to stop it turning. Basically its an inch wide length of metal with a couple of holes in. One end I put a flywheel bolt through and the other a gearbox mount bolt - works a treat ;)

Oh and the flywheel, I can usually hold that whilst undoing the bolts, they aren't that tight ;)
