Noisy GTi Mk 5?
« on: 24 January 2010, 17:21 »
Hi sorry for the lack of introductions, I will post there shortly but was eager to ask a question.
Now dont laugh at me because I am blonde and female so this may be a daft question, but my 05 gti has a very loud engine type noise when travelling at 50 mph or more. It is alongside the normal engine noise but sounds almost like I need to change gear despite being in 6th at only 50mph. Is this normal or should I be worried that I have brought a car with a major problem already! Just to add it only seems to be heard inside the car, with windows down you dont seem to hear it outside.
Cheers in advance for any input

There are simply too many things that it could be to diagnose without seeing and hearing it.

I suspect it is worrying you, so for peace of mind get it to a dealer or independant garage and see what they say.

How long have you had the car and did you buy it with any warranty?  If so, the dealer you bought it from should at least check it out for free

Is it actually the engine noise? Trying going up to 50 in 6th and then taking it out of gear (so the revs drop) and see if you can still hear it. If you can then it isnt the engine and could be something like a wheel bearing which make a droney noise when they are on their way out.

Could be quite a few things. I'd say take it to VW, but going on recent topics that would be about as useful as taking it to an Albanian Goat Herder.

Find a decent independent garage and stay well away from the VW dealer network.

I second that, much better service & better prices :afro:

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Thank you for your replies, it is something that is worrying me so I will take all your advice and book it in at the garage, and no it hasnt come with warrenty
Ps It does still do it when not in gear, the noise slows down with the speed of the car but slower than the revs if that makes sense.
Will update when I know more

What make of tyres do you have newfs1??

Have a look to see if they are Dunlop Sportmax tyres?
