problems with my mk2 and my mk4
« on: 23 January 2010, 19:46 »
Hi all
Firstly i been having problems with my 1990 gti 8v .it all start a couple of weeks ago the engine froze up but was not even turned over until it had thawed out. when i tried to get it going it would not start so i changed plugs, leads ,cap ,rotor arm and blue temp sender.then it would start fine at first until i switched it off and tried to restart it.To get it going again i had to clean the plugs as they were wet with petrol.i then changed the ecu and ignition module which i thought had sorted it and have been using it everyday since until today it was driving fine for about 20 miles of stop-start driving when it started to splutter then drove fine for about 3 miles then the spluttering and backfiring was back .Had it towed home changed the ecu and ignition module again which made it drive fine again.left it parked up for couple of hours went to go out and it just splutters and backfires.
i really need to get this sorted as got to use it for work on monday.

secondly ive just brought a s-reg mk4 golf 1.8 20v turbo which will start fine but wont rev over 2000rpm.its like the rev limiter is kicking in.its the agu code engine.a mate came and put in on a snap on diagnostic box and it came up with one fault code.
01165 throttle valve adjuster.
the previous owner said he had to remove the battery to charge it due to it going flat when he had it parked up for a couple of month.
The reason he parked it up was it had started to smoke a little at idle but it drove fine and didnt smoke when driving.
So has anyone else had these problems ?
thanks for your time in reading all this.Damien

The MK4 one could be anynumber of things, has the fault been cleared? if so has it come back? It could be a boost leak, check al your hoses.
MK4 GTI T AGU, REVO Remap, BMC carbon box, Miltek cat back, Forge diverter valve, THS FR3 engine/Gbox mounts, Some random alloys, lowered on coilovers.
192bhp 212lbft torque.
