I only have 3rd and 4th gear!!

To be honest I havnt had a looksie at it yet but the other night going from forth to fith gear the stick went all floppy. I pulled over to find I could engage third and forth but no reverse or any other gear. When I work up the courage to go out to it what should I look for? I hoping a linkage or something has popped off or snapped.

aye, chances are you have a snapped rod. on mine when this happened it was the long one, loads of duck tape round the afflicted end got it sorted till new VW rod ordered. (pattern one I ordered was looser than a loose thing, the old VW fitted better!)
