nasty knock
« on: 20 January 2010, 23:57 »
hello once again. had about four months of trouble free motoring since the last episode but hear i am again.got a 99 1.8t agu, slowly moding it but having to spend the money on repairs at the mo ,thats why i,ve come to the fountain of knowledge again. right down to the problem

passenger front tyre is cutting on the inside quite badly, got the spare on at the mo, have replaced the tyre but those 225/40/18,s aint cheap, so a bit reluctent to fit it until i,ve solved the problem. i had it tracked a few months ago and it seemedf fine for about 3 weeks then started pullin to the left slightly, i havent knocked the wheel . also under hard acceleration from the same , it feels like the wheel is knocking up and down almost like the shock has gone. would this also explain the tyre wear and pulling to the left?  or could it be the bottom arms ? any help would be wicked as i feel like a p?:ck drivin it with 3 18s and a skinny spare and i don,t  wanna start spendin if i dont know what it is, savin for a remap you see and a turbo back exhaust, luverleeee. thanks for takin the time.

jack the car up and see if the wheels do any movement. i.e. wiggle up/down left right could be ball joint or bearing

thanks for the reply mate. is bearing common, and does that explain the knock i,v got? idont bloody know.!!!!!!!!!.  i,ve had bearings go on other cars  and its never really caused a knock or tyre wear, just a drone normally.  i,ll get it up on the stands properly on the weekend and have a good look.  ta.

yeah a friend just had a knock from the wheel + bad tyre wear, but that was the ball joint AND bearing.  Basically the ball goes gets loose and you hear the banging of the ball in its joint. Also throws the alignment out and the wheel leans more.
