Test drives from private sellers...
« on: 23 October 2004, 16:20 »
Hi.

I've always bought/sold my cars through dealers in the past, so never had to think about this....

What do you guys do about insurance when you test drive cars you're looking to buy, or when letting others test drive a car your looking to sell?

I've just phoned up my insurance co and they say they don't do cover for test drives (but then again, it was just some chap at a foreign call centre who might not know what he's talking about).

Do you just not bother getting insurance at all, or am I missing a trick???

Cheers,
Rich.

if you have driving other cars on your current policy, and the car you are test driving is insured by its current owner - then you do have 3rd party cover at the very least.

yeah there is pros/cons to this, as tinman said, if your insured fully comp on your current vehicle your normally insured to drive any other car with the owners permission as long as the vehicle is insured also, there fore for a test drive of a mk2 16v for example take your insurance document to prove to current owner you are covered. For test drives on yours if selling do the same insist on proof of cover (3rd party) from a fully comp insurance cover on there current vehicle etc.

Occasionally (50%+) the buzz of a possible buy/sale will overide any doubts of insurance!!!!! n(my self included, if they bin your car whilst test driving you take there car/wife/kids etc until payment is made!!! LOL)

have fun richy its a wild world out there!!,

I'm fully comp with Admiral, and it explictly says in the policy guide that I am not covered for driving other people's cars, unless it is stated on my certificate, which it isn't.? (At the bottom of the certificate it says "The driving of other cars extension is not included unless specified..." )

Probably have to pay extra for this? >:(

Don't care if its only 3rd party.  Just don't want to be prosecuted for driving without insurance if some chav crashes into me on the test drive!!

were with admiral on both our golfs and were covered to drive any other car with the owners permission, maybe thats due to age and stuff, me being a nearly old git of 30 and the mrs is 29.....

grrr? >:(? ?They wont let me have it unless I'm 25!!? It's not like I'm gonna suddenly become safer in 5 months time!!

They wont even let me pay for 1 day's 3rd party insurance on the car I want to test drive.? I spoke to a guy in a call centre who said he was the supervisor, but I reckon if I call the Quality Management office on Monday, they might be able to sort sommit out? ;)
