getting a spare key.
« on: 19 January 2010, 17:03 »
hi all,
I have a 96 8v GTi.  I only have one key for the car.  It is not a fob with buttons, I have to put the key in the car to unlock it.

I want to get another key for a spare, but a friend told me I will have to go to VW if I want a key that starts the car.  He said I can get a key that will allow me into the car.

The reason is there is a transponder in the key fob that deactivates the immobilisor, is this true?
As I don't really want to pay 60 - 70 quid at VW.

Many thanks.

yes this is true im afraid, unless you purchase a usb cable called 'vag-tacho' or know someone with the software.  oh, unless you have the original tags that came with the car from new with the lock and immob codes printed on them.

btw you can get any old locksmith to cut you a key that fit, just take it to vw to have it matched to the immobiliser.  obviously have to buy a key that has a chip in it for the immob.
