How do build weeks work
« on: 19 January 2010, 08:12 »
Can anyone advise how the build weeks work, or to which week of the month they relate to

Do they map against the actually week number for the current year?
How long approx is the car ready for collection from the dealer (I suspect reading posts it's about 2 weeks after the build week?)

Glad I didn't by a BMW 325i\330i msport now, just seen on autotrader web site "new BMW 3 series for 2010"! Now I can see why I was able to get a 325i for same price as the GTI (even pre-price increase) with some of the moster discounts late last year.

In case of German factories it is calendar week:) We're now in week 3.

Once they've built the car it takes about 2-3 weeks to get it shipped to UK and delivered to the dealer, then about 1 day for the dealer for an PDI and cleaning. They can start doing the paperwork (registration, VED) from the moment the car is in UK so if your dealer is clever you shouldn't have to wait long to pick it up. There may be some delay if you have private plates and/or want to keep your previous plate.

2 week from the bulid week you would be lucky

Cool thanks Radek.

Also what do the dealers do in the PDI?

It's a shame that you don't get a link to track your oder and see progress of your car, would save calling you dealer etc. However I guess then you'd know if your slot had been passed to someone else lol.

I got a list of what was checked when I asked for it. Basic tests really: the car works, has fluids, all options correct, short roadtest.

Yes, the system is only for VW dealers. It would be too costly for them to let people see what's going on :)
There was a really good check list some time ago on Mk5 forum about collection. I'll try to find it.

Unlike many people I advise spending some quality time walking around your car when you pick it up. The consumer law states that if you had a chance to inspect your car and didn't see a fault you could have and should have you cannot complaint about it afterwards. The reality is you can but it's up to the dealer to take you seriously.

I think it would be really useful to have the option to track your car during assembly. If I can track a package when it's with FedEx or DHL, I can't believe it would be that difficult to track a car as it passes specific points on the assembly line.

Was just thinking that - when you can track your latex suit coming from the States, why not track your car being assembled / shipped etc.

Come on VW !

lol not sure about your choice in suites, but was thinking the same re DHL. Wouldn't cost too much for that facility to publish tracking details.

Funny one was John Lewis's web site, you can track your order, find out which wearhouse your goods are in, and even who's packing your order!
I could see all the dealers going noooo.... as I do detect a lot of switching orders about between clients lol.

"Latex suits".  Yes, I did wonder about that, but it takes all sorts...probably a little uncomfortable though when driving on a hot summer's day...
