Stalling GTI

Having read the various posts on here about revs dropping and stalling when slowing in gear I can confirm that cleaning the Throttle Body does cure this problem.  I having been having problems with low revs and stalling (Mk3 2.0 8V GTI) everytime when slowing at junctions or pulling up.  Its gradually got worse over the past 3 months.  At the weekend I took the Throttle Body off the car and although it did not appear that dirty to me I gave it a quick clean and polish but was still very sceptical that this would cure the problem.  I was very pleasantly suprised that after I had refitted the Throttle Body the problem was solved.  It only took about an hour to sort the problem thanks to some words of advice on here.  Thanks!!

if it wasnt really dirty then could just be where uve disconected + the wiring + put it back on

I'm literally just about to whip my throttle body off now...  Hope this bloody works!!!

Easy enough Mate....disconnect the two air pipes from top, unscrew and remove four allen key bolts, then disconnect the two pipes from the bottom (be careful may contain water). Then it's all yours. Clean with carb cleaner or wd40 and an old toothbrush then replace. Takes about an hour to an hour and a half all in.     Cheers      Deano

Watch the gasket on the intake end too..mine tore a bit, i replaced with a new one..it's important to get a tight seal there...well as is anywhere fuel/air related,

I carried out the TB cleaning process as mentioned earlier and as expected the rear side of the butterfly was gummed up slightly, half a can of carb cleaner and some fine wire wool coupled with some mighty elbow grease and the inside was spick and span in no time.
So far the hunting idle and stalling has stopped, the only issue i'm finding now is that it idles slightly faster and deceleration of the revs just around the 1200 rpm mark  seems to be drop slower and hover a touch before resting. Im wondering whether this could be a throttle cable issue or something else now?

I found it easier to undo the water pipes from the other end ie not the TB end.  I also just bought a bottle of white spirit cost about £1.90 from B&Q.  I did replace the gasket which was £2 from a VW dealer.
