you really dont want a bare metal respray unless its completely needed.
if the panels are original, you can get the little dinks taken back to bare metal, pushed out and filled (to minimise filler), but the parts of the bodyworkthat are in reasonable condition you don't want to go bare metal.
first reason to avoid it if you can - whilst the car is bare metal it'll start rusting. you wont see it, but in bare metal it is totally unprotected. if you can avoid it then you should.
you will pay the price of a bare metal respray in many years to come as the contaminants finally get to the surface.
second reason, the orginal undercoat VW put on the car will be okay and will be better than anything a sprayer can put back on your car anyway. if you don't need to take the undercoat off, dont. it'll also leave the car protected before the car gets sprayed.
bare metal sounds good - but isn't as good as it sounds.
if you are going for show finish ask your sprayer about a mirror finish.
