no turning back??
« on: 17 January 2010, 19:33 »
this is opinion post. sort of.
who's had a 16v, upgraded to a vr6 but for whatever reason went back to a 16v?
i had the 16v for 2 years, and now have a vr6 highline. is it wrong that i miss the 16v and am thinking of going back to one??

any thoughts?

Hard to say, you will miss the torque of the VR if you switch back.

and the sound... but vr6's arnt that much faster than a 16v. And 16v are the track weapon choice aswell

Sort of...

I convinced myself I wanred the low down torque, noise etc...and could live with the negative impact on the handling...so built a high spec 2.9 VR6...and just couldn't bring myself to fit it.

Every time I drove one I thought it was lazy, not as quick as I'd hoped, abysmal of fuel, and poor handling.
So I sold the engine/'box/loom etc to a mate, and bought some Jenveys for the 16v.

I've driven loads since...and I still don't want one.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Perhaps you need to ask yourself which element is giving you a kick.. Or, which of the two is harder to live with..

Is it ownership.. or the drive..or the status on the road... which gives you the kick?

Do running costs have a bearing on things..?

Maybe if you can answer some of those you might know which you really prefer..

I can just about live with the fuel consumption rate of an 8valve GTI.. not financially but morally.. Even if i could afford a Ferrari or Porsche the rate the fuel guage fell to zero would make me ask too many questions..

Personally i like simplicity, and owning a Golf GTI or a VR for that matter is about more than just driving.. I like to be able to work on my vehicles, bodywork and engines..it's part of the enjoyment of keeping something well fettled i think...but probably a VR would be too complicated and expensive engine wise for me..

It's hard to say.. hopefully some food for thought there anyway ;)

I'd have a vr anyday over a 16v.
But that's just my opinion.

vr and 16v are very different car's....think vr6 as a lazy cruiser and 16v as the sports model, do you want the relaxing mile munching vr6 or the faster feeling 16v (although it's slower it will feel much more sportier as you drive it)

That's a very interesting opinion.
I've never found that a 16v felt faster or sportier than a vr.
That's probably because it isn't.

+1 never found the 16v sporty to drive to be honest.
