thanks again Al, I have found a set of valves at a local delaer despite them being obsolete so will get these wednesday , try and flush the matrix out, but I have to agree with you I think that it is the matrix, but I'll get them in in case for future problems. the matrix loks a slow and careful job, but the fan motor is squealing so maybe a chance to sort them both out, I'll report back on these pages when I have replaced the valves and flushed it through.

best rgds,

I thought that originally, as I had heat back in the car! But just watch out for that sickly smell of antifreeze and steaming up windows. It only took less than a week for the matrix to get worse once i'd bypassed the valves

When the valves are out of the car try running the metal one under a hot tap with the flow going through the valve, (in direction arrowed on valve) if it comes out the other side of that valve then theres nothing wrong with it. If the water flows through to the black valve and exits that one then your valve is stuck and you need another one.

I'm affraid your wrong there mate
the metal one will still flow water when buggered but only a trickle
not the full flow as it should be
I've experimented with a few to come to this conclusion
it turns out that it works in the same way as a thermostat inside
I assume the wax stuff eventualy deteriates over the years and hot water shuts it

the vw dude I spoke to was very informative on the subject of these valves

yes your right billydude just had the very same thing with mine seems as if it is working when in fact it is not. It was letting water through under the hot tap but when its on the car because the wax has gone it wont stay open and as soon as the main thermostat opens the pressure just closes it and you dont get any flow through the matrix, borrowed one off my son in law just to prove it was that befor i buy new one and the car works like a new one.

all i'm saying is just watch for your matrix!
Replacing the valves may only be a temporary fix

the matrix issue could well be caused by the same thing as the valves packing up that being a minor head gasket blow
since both the 8valve and the 16valve golfs on my front have had the valves go and when I stripped the 8valve I found it had blown on no1 and 4
the valver had a headgasket just before I brought it

Dont know if this is any use to anyone but I have fixed squeaky blowers before by opening all the doors and bonnet switching the fan on, directing air through the side vents and pointing them out of the car and spraying wd40 into the air intake.

Didnt smell in their either.

Quick fix and cheaper than changing the blower.
