how to change an outer cv joint? please help...
« on: 16 January 2010, 17:06 »
hello all... i have lost my haynes manual, and was wondering if anyone would kindly discribe briefly how to change the outer cv joint and how long it roughly takes.. at the moment the front right up in the air with the front strut removed its the drivers side if that makes a difference.. i have had a look through the search options but havn't had much joy..
differance, this is the last job to do before the mot so any advice would be greatly received..
thanks andy....

ive posted about it in a thread before, if yours is a GTI you will need a fixture to press out the splined end of the cv that passes through the hub as it is either bonded in with lockng compound or an interference fit so it wont just knock out.
basicly
1 undo bolts holding inner cv to gearbox (not normall torx head bolts special ones)
2 undo bottom arm to hub 3 small bolts + swing out hub
3 (the nut shoulda bin removed before jacking up) press out outer cv joint with fixture that bolts to the wheel bolt holes (i welded up my own but even the M16 bolt i used to press it out got messed threads its so tough)
4 the drive shaft will now be free+ you can remove outter cv, cant remember exactly how to but its pretty straightfoward
5 refit everything+ dont put any weight on the wheel with the outter cv not fitted properly as it f**ks the bearing
hope this helps
