Depends on whether starting from cold or warm but 300-450A intantaneous would be about right, perhaps 200 once turning over.

was cold..... mine was pulling anywhere from 3.1 to 6.2
guessing that would be 310 - 620 amps???
what happens is starter spins stops as if dead battery then fires up

A diesel starter may pull a bit more current as its designed to turn something with 20:1 compression ratio, but sounds like you may have a bad connection on the back of the starter, a bad earth down behind the battery or on the gearbox or possibly your timing is way too advanced and the engine is firing too early almost stopping the engine from turning over........... :undecided:
I would check the electrical connections and earths first then look at ignition timing.

this seems to have happened since the bad weather....
its been fine for abt a year starting wise, timing hasnt been touched, although i did play with air flow mass sensor...
both connections on starter motor have been checked, all earths cleaned up etc

its confusing me as it doesnt always happen
