Makes no difference if it is a parallel or grey import and even with uk spec it still started life outside this country, dealers will not be keen to pay top money as they can be hard to shift, put it another way given the choice of a uk car or an import I will always pick the uk car if it was available new here.

All Golfs started life outside this country.  You order a car from a UK dealer and it gets made in Germany and then shipped to the UK dealer.  You order a car from say a dealer in the Netherlands to the same spec as the UK dealer and it gets made in Germany and then shipped to the Netherlands and then makes its way to the UK.  Both scenarios same spec, made on the same production line.

I agree that it might put off some buyers therefore dealers may be reluctant to buy it at full trade price in case it sits on their forecourts for a longer time than a UK car.  Dealers should make people aware that it is the same spec and that their warranty will cover the same things as a UK car.

I'd buy an import used car if it was 100% UK spec and a grand cheaper but I wouldn't buy one if it was not 100% UK spec.

Stick with the golf and see how you get on
We had a second kid last year and we have been away for a few weekends and have managed no problem, thats including a pram and a travel cot as well as the rest of the gear

I fancy a S4 avant but most of me wants to keep the golf

FWIW, when I had my kids (well the wife did, I was just a passenger!), we had a 306. Not big enough.

We moved to a more family-friendly car - a Subaru Impreza Turbo wagon!!!

When our 2nd child appeared, we went to a Scooby Turbo saloon. Wierd choice, as I'd also had a Labrador that resembles "Clifford, the big red dog" = bl00dy thing used to rest his head on the handrake, as he couldn't fit in the back!

We then moved onto an Audi S4 Avant. - Loads of boot space, and a V6 twin turbo  Had some good trips out in that

Now the kids are more mobile (6 & 9), the Golf 3dr is perfect.

Perhaps a roof box is a cheaper option.

Fair point, however if it was cheaper to start with then it will be worth less come the time to move it on.

I think they want to punish people for getting good deals in the first place and not using overpriced UK dealers.

If I somehow managed to haggle 5000 off a new UK GTI, I wouldn't expect to get less for it than someone who paid list price.

I do want to keep the Golf as it is such a good car but it is such a hassle with a toddler and a newborn.  I haven't got any space to store a roof rack when it's not in use so I can't go down that route.  I only live in a small terraced house with a tiny garden.

My wife also wants a double buggy and they can be huge!

It's a shame you're finding the Golf too small but I'm a bit surprised you're finding it a hassle

You have five doors and a hatchback with a pretty deep boot.  Leg and headroom won't be problem for you for many years !

I would have thought the only time you would really struggle is when you're going on holiday with suitcases & buggies

I gather that the space problem is occasional rather than all the time.
A couple of solutions to not having space to store a roof box

I've just had to let my GTi go.  A combination of two toddlers and having to do a lot more miles than I was before in my old job, has meant I've swapped it for a BMW tractor. Once my work settles down in 6 months time and mileage returns to the usual 6/8k pa I was doing before, I will buy a MK6 GTI.

Anyway I px'd the following car at a BMW dealer on Dec 22nd against a very keenly priced 4 month old BMW and snatched his hand off at £13,850 !

My car was :

07 07 Golf GTi 5dr DSG
Diamond Black
18"s, Full Leather, Armrest
Hi Line
27k and FSH
Mint condition

But a Import from Cyprus - full UK Spec.

Bidding can be stupid from the dealers but its worth going at as there are deals to be had. I had bids at £10k, but had to work up to the £13,850. If i had paid over the top on the new one I would have understood, but it looks to be £4k under book compared too many other dealers. So hopefully, will run that for 6 months, make a few quid on it and then put a smile back on my face again and get a MK6
