Retro-fitting a rear view camera
« on: 16 January 2010, 12:07 »
Kind of wish I'd specced a rear view camera, so I phoned dealer to ask about a retro-fit and was told "impossible on a mk6, completely different set up which can only be done at manufacture"  Seems a bit odd has anyone any experience of fitting one after sales?

Thanks for that Snoopy, don't reckon I can have it anyway as I've only got RCD510, I'd never be able to do a job like that, only just got my head around blu-ray!!lol

I don't see why not. RCD510 is all you need for the factory fit camera.

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

That is quite interesting, I just assumed reading the link that you had to have an RNS510.  I will get back to my dealership and show them the write up and see what sh1t they spout.

Seriously VW dealerships don't cover themselves in glory do they?

VW dealers don't want you modifying your cars in that way as they would have to sort of guarantee the work. A VW specialist would probably be a different matter, they'd be the sort of people who'd have a go.
If VW sold a specific kit for retro fitting, then we'd get a bit of joy out of dealers. Some dealers would have brave and interested enough techies to try it, but their bosses wouldn't want the responsibility without some sort of VW approval.

So it's all down to warranties.  If only someone would get down off the fence and take responsibility for doing retro-fits etc at VW things would be much improved.

If it can be retrofitted to a mk5, it must be a bit easier on a mk6...

That and the fact they don't know how to price up a job unless it's already listed in their computer. Plus, in the time it takes to install a camera (which would also require thought), they could have ripped off several owners for a standard service - far more lucrative work.

i asked about fitting front park sensors on my 3-series. the BMW wanted, wait for this... £1,200! its a £300 option.

its always best to get more options (you'd only have wasted £150) rather than try to add things later.

the long waits on GTIs compound this as people end up snapping up demos, with fixed spec
Just sold an S5 - previously mkV R32 DSG Metallic Grey with RNS 510 (thanks to MortyGT140)
