Future classics..

So those of us that drive mk1s and mk2s know what it's like. You get stopped in a car park or petrol station and asked about your car, usually with the line "I have one of these back when I was young! I loved it."

My question is, do you honestly think cars like that mk4 and mk5 golf will be a future classic in 20 years time? I really can't picture it. "Oh! A mk4 golf gti! I had one of them in my twenties.. not many around now though.."


What do you reckon? Do you think the era of the classic car will forever be those from the 80s and older?

Its hard to tell I think. The MK4 and MK5 R32s will 100% be future classics.

well for sure the cars of today are not built to last like they where when the mk1s and mk2s where built so will they last 20 years or simply fall apart?

That's a good point. I know for sure cars like the 106/saxo and all the new french rubbish they put out won't be around much in 20 years!

as much as many of you wont believe, i get asked about my 3 ALL the time...

people appreciate older cars, especially sports cars, get it with my swift, my mat gets it with his series 1,

its just how it is, alot of these type cars have either rusted away, been written off or simply just ragged to death they didnt survive.


future classics

R32 in the vw world,and any gti really, theirs only people on here that have massiv problems with cars like the mk 3 gti, the general public just think "golf GTI"

I'm sure that there aren't that many mk1s or 2s around today compared to 20 years ago. And i'm pretty sure that the 106 gti and rallye, as well as the saxo vtr and vts will have a "classic" status about them in another 15 years or so, as well as the clio 172 and 206 gti 180........

Cars generally obtain cult status because they generate a strong emotion in people or are genuine drivers cars. Cars like the 74 911 RS, whilst there are many many 911's this is widely recognised as the best of them for the sheer enjoyment being behind the wheel brings. Other 911's are desirable but can you really see the new RS with its pink stickers and huge wheels being sought after in 40 years time, I certainly can't.

To become a cult/desirable/collectable car it needs to be outstanding to drive and timeless to look at and pull at your emotions. Very few cars built in recent time that are designed by a computer rather than an artist/designer with the exception of the real exotics, Zonda et al have acheived this.

All my opinion of course.
