Roof Aerial.........oops!
« on: 07 January 2010, 13:54 »
Hi all, Just thought I'd clean the snow off the golf today, got a bit carried away and took off the roof aerial  :embarassed:. I'ts a retro fit job and there's just a bit of metal casting sticking out of the hole now (sealed with silicone). Are there still kits available for these, if so where can I get one and how do they fit? Thanks

Sounds like you needed a new one anyway if it broke off so easily.

If you want to go for genuine vw parts, a Mk4 one would be easy enough to fit, but you would need a complete new cable back to the head unit as well.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

From what I see, most of the vag roof aerials are very similar. My mates lupo has a roof aerial thats identical to mine as does the girlfriends VR6 and her old mk4.

Should be easy to find matey

Roof lining? As far as I'm aware, take off the plastic covers over the A, B and C pillars, and you can slide it out the boot (if not, take a few more screws out that are under the trims) there's tutorials for taking the roof lining out everywhere

Open the tailgate, pull off the rubber seal that traps the headliner, slide your hand in the gap, you'll find a 15mm (iirc) nut, and the coax should have a threaded connector a few inches away from the base.... 5min job to get off

Just had a crack at getting the old aerial mouning out & broke the plastic trim that runs across the end of the roof, bu**er! No matter I can get another but.......the insulation matting above the roof lining is sodden with water across the whole width and as far forward as I can reach, I suppose the aerial hole could have been leaking for ages but I don't see how it would soak so much. Oddly the roof lining itself does not seem wet and is in pretty good shape. Should I be looking for a leak anywhere  else that would get into the roof insulation?   :undecided:

Make sure your sunroof drains arent blocked as this can cause water to leak into the headlining

the easiest thing would be to take all the headlining off, get it dry and it maybe easier to see where the leak is coming from! my polo has exactly the same mounting as my mk2, as earlier pointed out alot of vag cars have the same so if u have a breakers near you it would be alot cheaper! :afro:
