Hi all , my car is due a service at 30 000 miles , and is 4 years old in May . The local dealers have quoted me £288 as it is "the big one" . Is this a good price do you think , I am always apprehensive about services but have had good dealings with this dealer , but dont like getting ripped off.

Also they have a special offer on cambelt change for £295 , how does this compare ?

Service price sounds about right.  I paid £290 for my 4 year service, this price doesn't include the brake fluid change which normally costs about £50.

£295 for the cambelt is a good price.  Get them to change the water pump too, should only cost you about an extra £30 or so, very little additional labour is needed.

That is a good price.

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Cambelt is a VERY good price, I couldnt get less than £400 - got it done. As someone said, get the waterpump done for an extra 30-40 quid

My service needs to be rearranged as I am snowed in - I am wary that I have been quoted too much.. they went on about some "extras" etc - engine flush or something? I wasnt really paying attention. Mine too was the "big one" - spark plugs changes etc... as the OP says, what is the recommended price and what should you expect to get from it?

Excuse my ignorance (and I've used the search facility), but does anyone know why would you need to change a cambelt at 30,000 miles/4 years? I mean, beyond 'because VW said you must'...

Yep, sorry, just found and read April's 15 page thread on the subject. I'll just say visual inspection is acceptable preventative maintenance for a 4 year old cam belt. But don't spend hundreds of pounds changing it unless it actually needs it.

And I liked this quote:

"i honestly dont know.. im not technicaly minded, its just whats ive benn taught.."
