Had a ride home on a flatbed last night :/
« on: 05 January 2010, 17:37 »
Car details:
P reg Golf GTi 2.0
Think engine is AGG
Mk3 8v

Did a good long journey with no problems yesterday, then did a short journey in the evening and hit a few problems.
The car started stuttering when I was going slow (round corners for example) then died completely when I got where I was going.
Wouldn't start at all, so got recovered to home.

Found that a piece of pipe I had used to block off two small inlets on the pipe that runs from the throttle body to the brake servo had popped off (it was a replacement pipe after the old one split. The original had 2 small caps blocking the inlets). I know it doesn't run with it off, so replaced it. No luck there.

Today I checked for a spark from the coil and plugs, all good. There was petrol getting to the engine. I managed to flood it, so let it vent for a few hours and dried out the plugs.

Just stuck it back together and still no joy. Engine will turn over, but not fire up.

I'm running out of ideas now. Searched on here and not found anything I havn't tried already. Has anyone else got any ideas before I give up and push it over the road the the garage? (luckily it was booked in on Thursday anyway for a CV joint :))

Trying to find my Vag-Com cable to see if anything else shows up there. But recently moved, and think it is still boxed up :(

EDIT: Throttle body is clean, and I had a look in the distributor as well. Was a little corroded in the contact points, but cleaned it up a bit.

Could I have gotten some contaminated fuel? Had filled up just a bit before the long journey yesterday.

I remember reading something very similar in a corrado forum about a year ago. Might be well off the mark, but have u been through any large puddles lately?
I theory if ur getting spark and fuel the engine should run even if it runs very badly or in short burst
I dont know if this translates over from the corrado fuel tank but his got water into the fuel tank in a very odd place (cant remember how at first i though they were barking up the wrong tree) but had similar symptoms as you. Basically he confirmed it by looking into the fuel tank through the inspection panel in the back of the car and seeing the water floating around the tank (because petrol in lighter,or the other way around).
He originally tried hours of cranking over till it ran lumpy and attempted to run it through but didnt get anywhere, it would still refuse to start
Anyway he went to halfrauds and bought a petrol additive that magically removes moisture from petrol, it might well be this: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_193117_categoryId_165750_langId_-1?cm_vc=IOV4PDPZ1
He first let it "do its work" for a while, cranked it over till it would start and very quickly after that it ran fine!!

Might be worth thinking about! Ohh and make sure u have a battery charger!
