16v Exhaust downpipe / Manifold
« on: 03 January 2010, 20:57 »

HI All,

I've got a problem with my H-reg 16 valver :o, the exhuast system is full stainless magnex ... and has the later sports type downpipe, which joins to the manifold by i think 6 bolts (maybe 4) and is again stainless but after closer inspection, this downpipe has cracked around the pipes at the top end, just below the manifold :( now blowing bad :(

What do you think are the options ?
I've looked on ebay for another ...but none at the moment. the garage that looked offered to take a closer look, take the downpipe off and weld the cracks and refit... do you think this is a good idea ?

He will give me a rough price tmrw....but can the downpipe come off from below the car ? without moving subframe and steering rack ? what do you think at a guess the cost could be ?

Ive looked at a milltek performance manifold .. but have been told is big job to change :( and im on a tight budget :( what would you guys recommend ??? I need the car daily at the mo.

I'll let you know what the garage says tmrw .. thanks :)

Isnt magnex manifold and downpipe the one thats not really compatible with standard stuff if you want to mix and match?

get him to weld it, then buy a solid front mount and new rear and box mounts, cos that very likely the reason its cracked.
S4 Avant. Eibach springs. 18" Avus. RS4 Intercoolers. Viper Tuned. Goes Fast.

As above from memory Magnex was a bit / lot different in how it fitted, getting it welded is going to be your only option.

Thanks guys.
After talking with a mk2 friendly garage in Milton Keynes, the guy says yes you can weld stainless...but in his opinion would go again later down the line ... abd with the labour he thinks the best route is to:
Buy raceland 4 branch stainless manifold .... or similar from ebay for £185... says has fitted to many mk2 and welding & fitment is spot on.
Fitting ... worse case £235 all in.....to fit the 4 branch manifold...hopefully cheaper, but depends on removing the old one etc...

What do you guys think ??

I really want to keep the car, as so far everything else is good. Anybody running this manifold ? has does it sound ? anything else you would change at the same time ? gearbox linkage kit ?? any advice would be great.
Thanks in advance :)
