good shout on the tyres haha

mine is around 80mm down so not much use to u im afraid

I would love to go down 80mm but with the kids in the back it would not move and I would not be able to get on my drive so I think 60mm on the front will do nicely for me. Been to order my new rubber today so should get them next week and lowering the following week. Can't wait....just the seats to do then to finish it off for me!!!!!     Cheers     Deano

ive had mine 5 up with it lowerd 80mm+ and all was fine

can i ask why you're going to get thinner width tyres than those that come as standard?

that means less rubber otr which = worse handling?

It's not that simple...
Good 195s will be better than crap 205s or 215s.
195s were also standard on early GTIs - my 1993 early Mk3 was on 195/50/15s.

I've tried 195, 205 and 215 wide tyres, on 15", 16" and 17" wheels and you know where the limits are easier on 195s...the car moves about more and is more fun.
On 215s for example...it grips, grips, grips then lets go big time. Little warning.

I'm considering going back down to 195s next too.

agreed that good tyres are a must. surely though good 205's or good 215's will be better than good 195's?

you can't compare good tyres against rubbish ones!

It depends...
I'm no slower on 195s than on 215s because you can push 195s to the point of sliding, as you get plenty of warning it's happening, and can make the car move about a bit - which I like.
Whereas on 215s, you have so much grip that you push on with one eye looking for a soft verge in which to position your accident...as you have little warning of when the car is going to let go.

you can go too wide...so wide you ruin the way the chassis behaves...and it just gets numb.
Grip...then nothing.

Much of being quicker A to B is to do with confidence. If the car is doing what you want, and you know exactly the amount of traction and grip you have...you relax, and drive quicker.

Always being aware that you have no idea where the limit is, isn't relaxing...so can be slower.

Of course, on a standard suspension GTI you'll have scraped the door handles and crashed long before you run out of grip, regardless of the tyre width fitted.

I'm with Ess Three on this one. I am still old school and loved nothing better than bombing around in my old Mark 2 Escort with the back end sliding about....great fun. I automatically asked my tyre man to get 195's and personally think they are the better ones for me. Although I am a bit older now and have two little girls to think about I still want to have a bit of fun every now and then.     Cheers     Deano
