OEM SATNAV - a few questions
« on: 01 January 2010, 13:23 »
Sorry if I'm posting a few seemingly stupid questions but I've just bought a 58 plate GTI & don't pick it up until next week - I can't help wondering about a few things in the meantime

This one relates to the SATNAV - just wondering if it has traffic warning, does it require subscription & ultimately is it any good ?

 thanks

 simon

Hi there

If you're referring to the touch-screen RNS510, then yes, it does have traffic announcements / route planning around congestion. Can't say I'm particularly impressed by this functionality, however. Congestion info often seems out of date, it complains of there being queues when there aren't any and other times you're sitting there for 20 mins and it thinks the road's clear!

Re subscription - MAKE SURE YOU GET THE DISC. I got my GTi (brand spanking new) in March 08, didn't come with the sat nav disc. I gave up the will in getting if off the stealers (they were also miles away), ended up buying a fresh upgrade. Cost around 180 quid!! But I think I should be able to just hand this in every couple of years or so and get a free upgrade as a replacement.

Straight up? Couldnt the dealer post it to you, even using DHL would have saved you £150.?

Kept on phoning and phoning and they kept on promising to post it but they never did. I even promised to post it back to them after making the update. I literally just gave up the will. They ground me down!!

I had a similar question last year - I got my disc from the stealer at £135.  The one supplied with the car was a fake burn from the web and didn't work correctly.

The RNS510 is a totally different system to the older MFD2 and the mapping disc can be altered to add OR remove the POI,  on the older mfd2 it was very hard to copy a disc and most of them didn't work has Yorkshire said,

I dont think ive had any back that ive sent to people and people have been happy to gift me £5 for the trouble of a new mapping disc,
