I would need new tyres even if I changed fron 7.5" wide 18" Monza Shadows, as most of the 18" wheels I like are 8" or 8.5" in rim width.
I'll remain static on this for now.

No, you'll be fine on 225/40/18s...even on a 8.5" wide wheel.

You can go to a 235 wide tyre of course, but unless the offset is spot on, you may find they rub the inners on full lock...also, going wider will numb the chassis slightly.
I don't find the Mk6 lacking in grip...so I am not prepared to loose any of the nimbleness by going to 235s...so 225s for me.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Yep new alloys and tyres as you know can set you back anywhere between £1500 and £2,500. Its certainly an expensive old buisness changing wheels and an addicative one...! Thats why I went down the second hand interlagos route for my winters (£600 sheets including tyres).

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

Those VMR V710 alloys are really finger-licking good  in Hyper Silver and Gun Metal. Only £999.99 per set.

This forum will be the end of me and my bank balance. I have to somehow wean myself off this addiction.

Is there a forum shrink? On second thought, not a very bright idea.
