VW Specialist in UK?

Hi, I'm based in Dublin and I have a problem with my MK5 GTi DSG. Theres a serious droning noise coming from the passenger side front and I've been to 4 different mechanics who all immediately said it was a wheel bearing. But when they looked at it further they all decided that they didn't know what the hell it was.. maybe the gearbox. So I took it to a gearbox specialist who doesn't think it's a problem with the gearbox! He says to leave it with him for a day and if it is the box it's going to cost €3,000 to replace!  :undecided:

To explain the problem in more detail: It's a droning sound that's just like a wheel bearing problem. It's worst at about 20mph and deafening when doing this speed and turning right (like around a roundabout for instance). So all 4 independent garages say it is not a wheel bearing and not the tyres.

I live right by the ferry terminal that goes to England so I was thinking I might just drive the thing over to the UK cos everything is much cheaper there and there might be a chance of finding a VW specialist.

So, can anyone recommend a specialist garage in England who knows their stuff and are not going to rip me off?

Appreciate any feedback lads cos this thing is doing my head in! :cry:

have a look in the good guys section mate im sure there's a few around the north east manc and liverpool, also look in the good guys on clubgti, iirc you can get the ferry to liverpool  :wink:

I don't know any myself but ask over on www.vagdrivers.net as someone over there is bound to know someone in or around Dublin  :smiley:

What sort of tyres are they?  From what you describe it does sound a bit too excessive for the tyres but some brands are known for making a hell of a noise.  Dunlop Sportmax for one has had people going to the garage fearing busted bearings but it turned out to be the tyres.

Do you know anyone with wheels you could swap for a wee while just to completely rule that out?
