What do you get on the RNS510 ver the RCD510?
« on: 22 December 2009, 11:07 »
..apart from the Sat Nav function?

You loose the inbuilt 6 disc CD changer that the RCD 510 has...
Unless you want to pay even more for an armrest mounted one, in which case you loose the MIDI interface.

But you get an inbuilt HD?

Can you watch DVDs on the RNS510?
Can you get a TV tuner for the RNS510?

Can you store CDs on the inbuilt HD?

You get the media card reader on both, I assume?

I'm just trying to see where the additional £1000 goes, over a RCD510 + portable Sat Nav, that I already have!

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

18GB Hard Disk to store MP3s on
Ability to play DVD movies while stopped
Navigation - thats where the £1000 goes

You can have CD changer with the MDI USB/ipod adapter - the MDI needs to be the glovebox version, although I'm not sure there is a need to play cds when you have USB/ipod support

Oh and the RNS only supports 2GB SD cards whereas the RCD510 supports SDHC cards

Cheers...
Can you pop a CD in and have the RNS convert to MP3?

But better than my Snooper Indago at 5 times the price?
And no camera locations?
Hmm..

Because I don't have an iPod...but do have hundered of CDs that I can't be bothered to convert to MP3 in order to play an obscure album or track!

Out on interest,
How does the iPod control work?
Can you scroll through albums using the menus?
Does the VW set-up turn the iPod on and off with the RCD/RNS 510?

Spoke to a broker yesterday and he was telling me VW have a price rise after Christmas, this is above the vat increase in January

Sorry I meant to add

I have a 30GB hard drive – DVD – Sat-Nav on my Mitsubishi Outlander.
Of the three years I have had this car I have never used the DVD player. The hard drive is useful as is the Sat-Nav but personally I would not pay what VW want for this unit.

It depends how you look at it... the factory difference is about £1000.

You can also look at it in another way.  Ebay your RCD510 and get £250 - £300 for it, then buy an RNS510 on ebay for £500.  Cost of upgrade £250.

OK, its more expensive than a TomTom etc, but it fits straight in and looks the part.  It also doesn't leave a stiky circle on your windscreen that tells thieves you have a TomTom in your glove box!
Golf R... 3 door, DSG, Leather, Reflex Silver, Black 19" Talladega Wheels, ACC, Parking Sensors, RNS510 with Dynaudio, Reverse Camera, Luxury Pack, Cruise Control & Fiscon Bluetooth.

I didn't know this was possible. Where does the glove box MDI connect to the RNS when you have the CD changer?

get the RCD510
get an IPOD
then upload all your CDs to itunes, will take you about a minute a CD but once done you'll have your full album colleciton in your car, with a touch screen interface - AND you will have access to podcasts etc from all over the world so if you are bored of music for a while you can listen to a Radio 4 science program, football roundup from Liverpool fans club, gardening program, whatever you want (have a look on the itunes store to get an idea of what I am on about)

don't bother with the satnav, for £100 you can get a tomtom which is easier to use, more up to date, and plots much better routes (i've tried both)

if you can afford it get the dynaudio upgrade too, its awesome ! (Makes your music sound better than you'd ever expect)

I've got an ipod but I've also got around 1700 CD's - so that's maybe 28 hours worth of uploading. I think I'll pass on that until my son's old enough to do it for me!

twenty of your favourites at a time should do it (90% of the music i listen to is 20% of my music)
