Suspension on 115, 130 and 150
« on: 21 December 2009, 10:01 »
I was just wondering, is the suspension setup on the diesels the same as other normal golfs, as in are all the tdi's got the same setup or is it different from an SE to a GT?

Basically is there anything GT about our suspension or is it the same as like a 1.6 petrol?

I feel that the suspension feels a bit spongey and the car generally has quite a bit of roll.

I'd like to think the 150 would definately have a firmer setup.

Oh knowledgeable forum folk please advise.

150 came with the sports suspension as standard - about 15mm lower than the other GTs basically putting it at the same ride height as GTI's

Sports suspension was an option on the other models

Ways to combat roll:

1) Fit rear anti-roll bar
2) Fit uprated suspension - either shocks & springs or coilovers
3) Replace top mounts, bumpstops, bushes etc

I've done all the above with new shocks and top mounts etc having been fitted by my mate Dave on Saturday.  First impressions are that it feels like a new car :afro: although giving the weather conditions I haven't exactly put it through its paces!

Cool some more stuff to add to the ongoing list :)

I need to rob a bank or something to mod this golf lol

So say for example the 130 and a 1.6 petrol would have the same suspension setup more or less?

The GT's are lower than the say the S and SE models and then the 150 and GTI's are lower again.

Don't forget that you can't fit petrol springs and shocks to TDI's as the spring rates etc are different due to the extra weight of the diesel engines  :nerd:

I wasn't thinking of doing that just wondered how they compare throughout the range.

I was basically thinking that surely the suspension would be better giveing the 130 does have a good amount of poke so thought they would've made it a little more stable.

Do many folk on here go for strut braces aswell? as that was sort of a craze also when I was on the Jap scene with my Mazda

clue is in the title of the name - GT or Grand Tourer; its designed to cruise up and down motorways, not hammer around B roads and back roads.  Also as is well documented, the MK4 chassis is not exactly cutting edge technology

Strut braces do help things; depends how far you want to take it.  You could fit the quicker steering rack from a TT or an R32
