SOS! Replacing waterpump

I have MK2  Golf 1990 1.8 8v GTI.

Could anyone tell me whether it is difficult to replace a water pump, because I'm pretty sure mine went on the way home from work today.  There is water dripping out underneath the bottom pully.

I have been reading the Haynes manual and it seems pretty straight forward, but a little fiddly.  Am I right to think you don't have to take the cam belt off? as it doesn't say this in the manual, not for the 1.8 anyway.

Is it likely to just be the water pump or could it be the impeller as well(what ever that is).


Any tips  easy to read instructions or diagrams would be appreciated.

Is there anything else I will have to replace as standard procedure ie gaskets O rings etc.

Would it be okay to drive if I carry some water with me or is it not advisable?  Fortunately I live on an Island and it only takes me 10mins to get to work.  It's not even warmed up by then.

davo, i replaced my water pump on me 1.6 driver, was piece of pi55,
this is how i did it maybe an easier way
1.undo and move alternator out the way(1x6mm allen key in bottom of alternator, 1x 13mm nut,used to tighten the belt)
2.disconnect all the water hoses from the water pump(3if i remember correctly)
3.there will be 3 13mm nuts holding water pump on undo tap the water pump with small hammer and it should just fall off.
fitting is reversal,
i would buy a whole pump if u think urs has gone, taking em apart is not worth the hassel trust me i found it out, fit it with new o ring and job done.

Little trickier than doing the radiator but not much as dubslug says.

You don't need to remove the timing belt

Its usual to replace the impellor/bearing housing without having to replace the pump body (splits into 2) however you will remove the unit complete so don't do as I have done on at least 2 occasions and forget the O ring for the connection to the block You should get the gasket for the 2 housings as part of the kit

Having said that the difference in price between a new pump complete (?20.94) and just the impellor part (?14.50) verifies what dubslug says - not worth the hassle, go for a pump complete. That seal I mentioned is 63p.

have you got power steering?

it's a very straightforward job, done it myself on a 16v and am definately not a mechanical genius!

as above, move the alternator out the way, if you've got power steering you'll need to dropthe pump out the way as well. took me about 2 1/2 hours to do. Haynes manual is what I used.

I have ordered the water pump complete from Eurocar parts.? I didn't order the gasket though as I thought the pump would come as one piece with the gasket in between.? If I need to get one I can probably get one from the local motor spares store. Unfortunately the pump won't get here until Mon as they don't deliver on a Sat so I can't do it at the weekend.

 I had a look at the pump in the local store but it was only the pump, the half that is attached to the pulley.? So thats why I ordered the complete pump, even though I wasn't sure what was ment by the "complete" pump I figured that it was the whole lot where the 3 hoses are as well.? Is this correct?

Could someone tell me in detail where the pivot bolt is for the alternator as I'm not 100% sure. I suppose I'd find it after a bit of medling.

Oh and no it doesn't have power anything!

Hi,
It is very easy to replace the water pump if you have a Haynes manual. The pivot bolt is in the picture on page 236 at the top  left hand side of the picture. If you think about it you will understand how it works. The adjustment link has a bolt at either end, just loosen them both and tighten when finished adjustment.

Further to my last reply. The pivot bolt is to the rear of the alternator. The bolt is accessible through a hole in the timing belt cover, it is quite obvious when you look. The hole may have a blanking plug covering it.

Would have hoped so by now............not going to have much of an engine left by now otherwise
