Squeeky Shock on MK1 Cab

just bought later MK1 Cab for me other half, but the rear passenger shock really squeeks when you bounce it. Ive tried drowning the spring and shock in WD40, but to no avail!

it looks like the shock surface is a little corroded, do you think i should change the shock\spring?

If the shiny 'chromed' part of the ram is corroded then it will definately require replacement. However if you're on about the outer cylinder then not necessarily.

Usually first signs that a shock is on its way out is when the hydraulic fluid starts leaking from the seal between the ram and the outer case. Did you notice whether it was 'wet' before you sprayed WD40 everywhere?

the shiny part is still shiny!, the rest of it was dry and rusty, no leaks in sight?!?!

i just cant see what else could be squeeking, the springs a bit rusty too!

generally the cars clean, but the rear panel rear springs, filler neck is rusting away!, first thing i done was changed the filler neck, next is the squeek!

any more ideas?

Well I assume when you push the corner down the shock is working properly - its returning to level and not bouncing. Common failure is for the spring to actually break so that would be worth checking. Failing that, to be sure I'd change the shock absorber and check the spring whilst its off. Usually a good idea to do both sides - maybe a suspension upgrade on the cards

i had this on the front of my mk2.


its not reccomended to spray WD40 on any rubber stuff but i sprayed it on the top mount and it shuted the f**k up

nice one Blue, couple of squirts of spray grease (didnt use wd40 in the end) on the top mount in the rear and it stopped the squeeking! result..

update,

removed the rear shocks and found the spring had gone through the rusted spring cup, hence the squeek!!, replaced both rear shocks and the spring cup, stuck on some raceland springs whilst i was at it , and have now realised the fronts have gone... luckily bought ome Koni yellow inserts, so am going to attempt them!
