6 spd manual shift points
« on: 19 December 2009, 00:10 »
Hello all,

I've driven 400km with my GTI now, but have one issue.  The MFD says when it's okay to shift to the next higher gear.  I can't help but feel it's odd that the car can be going 40km/h in 6th gear with the RPMs around 1500.  Is this okay?

Also, is it okay to skip gears?, e.g. going from 4 to 6. Or from 6 to 3 if I need to use the engine brake.  I'm coming from a 5spd manual and the shifting was much more clear cut there.  Thanks for any advice.

If I were you I would completely ignore that feature, do what you think best, I'm even thinking I might ask if it can be disabled, its a load of old tosh....be care free, like DSG it does its own thing......

Human brain is always more flexible and adaptable than any computer. That's why you pick the manual box.
The shift indicator is trying to help you to economise your driving. If you are running in your car, I will ignore it as you do not want your car to stutter!l!

I don't think I've ever used 5th gear can't really see the point of it. I always go from 4th to 6th.

I always skip gears. The engine has enough torque to make easy progress by skipping gears both up and down the box.
The gear-shift indicators are just a guide. If you're in the dip between two hills you can anticipate what gear you will need to be in next far better than a blind computer can! Occasionally I take notice of this feature but generally wish it wasn't there.

This is something they copied off the mk1. Its a guide all its saying is with the current throttle position and the current load on the engine you can have that same power in the next gear up. Its a guide nothing more.
I would myself for the running in period not take notice of this indicator as the engine will still be tight and you may labour it a little if you follow the computers advice.
The 2nd to 4th gears etc i have done for years especially in something with close ratios and plenty of torque. I do it all the time in the GTIs

I constantly shift gears and in fact this is the best car I've done it in, effortless at every stage.

That recommended thing is only for fuel economy I reckon so unless you're driving long journeys you might as well disregard.

And hey, its a bloody mk6 gti, you need to have fun in 2,3 and 4 not go 40kph in 6th!

Hi Everyone,

I'm still running in the car, I have about 1500km on it.  I'm curious about everyone's experience with the clutch engagement as mine isn't very clean, e.g., when I'm in first and letting out the clutch pedal it makes a lot of clatter with application of the gas.  It does the same in reverse.  I don't notice it in higher gears.   It's causing me distress because it's hard to get moving briskly.  Maybe I'm just too particular.  I'm hoping the clutch/flywheel just have to break in.  What do my fellow GTI owners think?

Regards,

Sare

Wow! The mk6 tells you when to change gear? I have always found my brain suitable for such a demanding task
