looked at 2 cars so far.

bmw 320d se 2ltr

       OR

audi a4 tdi 2 ltr

I bought a grey 320d se with 140,000 miles on it, 1 owner company car, it was rock solid and I regret selling it, nothing went wrong in 10K, inside looked like new and it was no slouch.

I'm really thinking of buying another one!...loads of space for 4 adults and good boot too, 40mpg+ and I saw 135mph with no remap.

Bought it for £7500 on a 55 plate, £27K new.

Not being funny but running a car for 10k isn't very long.

Depends on the year of both. What MY are they?

As Alan states it all depends on the year of the cars. The E46 3 series BMW's had turbo issues on the pre 2003 cars. I have had both E46 and E90 BMW's but to be honest the build quality of the Audi's feels better. They are both good cars though however the BMW's manual gearbox is heavy until you get familiar with it. Just my opinions

both are 55 plates (bmw has 102,000 - audi has 114,000)

the bmw is immaculate tho. only without the auto wipers and lights.

bmw has the start/stop ignition button which is the only thing the golf hasnt got.

im really not sure that i want to sell it now having been looking around for cars, nothing has really shone out for the 8k budget we will/should have

wants a gt tdi

No turbo issues on that age BMW. The engine in the BMW is 163bhp at that age and the Audi is 140bhp unless it's the 170bhp but I doubt it at that age. The BMW will drive better. Up to you really, I always prefer to by cars below the 100k mark.

Stick with a petrol, get a GTi and buy a high mile one, lots of exfleet cars around with aprox 80-100K on the clock that will run on for another 100K especially if you avoid the DSG (one less thing to go wrong). You could pick one up for about what yours is worth, mileage kills the value which is why it will work for you.

You also have to ask your self, are you 55 or 25, the A4 and BMW in the spec you are thinking will turn you into a boring old man . I would only change to the A4 or BMW if they were more powerful e.g. 3ltr diesel (although even quick diesels are a bit boring). So the real question is, Boring and practical or fun and still quiet practical. The BMW 320d is almost GT quick but not GTi quick, that said it does handle great, but too many of them around for my liking, just not special enough.

Also remember, a current diesel owner will advise you to go diesel, listen to the petrol heads! For speed, thrills, fun, handling etc... the GTiiiiiiiiiii still beats the 170, not by a massive amount but enough to make the difference.

Surely you want a GTi, failing that get another VW group car with the GTi engine, I have the Audi A3 Sline with 2ltr TFSI engine, its a peach, should be changing to GTi soon though, love the latests changes to the GTi.

Good luck, hope its a petrol, failing that a Diesel Audi, VW or BMW are still great cars if thats what you want.
