Stereo system question...
« on: 18 December 2009, 09:16 »
Hi All

Hope everyone is well...

Had my MK6 for a few months now and it's still brilliant (apart from slight rattling and rain seeping through the door seals!!!).

However, when I chose the options on my car I didn't realise there would be nowhere I could plug my ipod in apart from the analogue small headphone type jack. Clearly, the problem with this is that although I can plug it in, I can't control it from the system.

The system I have is an RCD510 (or RDS, not sure, but it has sat nav) and I have a 6 CD autochanger in the armrest.

Does anyone know if there's a way I can modify the system to be able to link my ipod with the interface? Or if there's anything in general I can do about it?

It's my fault for not checking when I ordered the car but I can't believe things like this aren't standard in 2009!

Cheers

Paul

Is there no ipod/usb connection under the armrest?? You'll need a cable to connect.

Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.
GTI no. 4. Golf no. 5.  VW no. 7.

Sounds like you have the RNS510 - i.e. Sat Nav - but anyway you should ask/ get an ipod cable which you can plug into a socket in your armrest.  From there you'll be able to control your iPod from the stereo unit and MFD.

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

An ipod interface is standard (Multimedia Device Interface) - when you spec the sat nav with armrest mounted CD autochanger you loose the MDI. The CD changer uses the same input on the back of the sat nav as the MDI so unfortunately you can't have both.

Yeah thats what I suspected, that the 6cd autochanger has ruined my chances of linking my ipod.

In that case, is it easy to buy the connection cable and disconnect the 6 cd autochanger? If so, what do I need and where do I get it from?

And most importantly, how easy would it be to install?

Cheers!

Needs to be MP3 files - the RCD510/RNS510 can't handle AAC files of any type AFAIK...You can now convert to MP3 in iTunes but some of my older purchased tracks couldn't be done.  It's also quite confusing since you end up with two copies of every track you convert (the idea being to then delete the original AAC version).

Getting the tracks onto the SD card is relatively easy - remember you may be limited to 2GB or smaller cards if not the latest (Voice Control?) RNS510 firmware.  Just get a cheap USB Media Card reader (less than £10 at Tescos) if you don't have one and the SD card will mount as a Drive in Windows.  With the SD card in the RNS510 you can copy to the HDD in the SatNav (so you can get 18GB or so of files ultimately) but it's a little awkward and very slow to do so (maybe an hour to copy a 2GB SD!)...

To the OP can't you just copy your mp3's to the hard drive of your RNS510?

Uh huh, thats actually very interesting, gonna muck around with my itunes when I get home. I read elsewhere that you need to back up all files to MP3 then transfer to sd card which sounds like crap but hopefully those posts were old.

How about if youre using a Mac? I assume I should be able to do it as long as you format the drive properly? FAT or something?

Didn't realise you can copy music across, that's excellent.
