8v to 16v - just the head?
« on: 15 December 2009, 21:13 »
All,

So bit bored tonight and was reading the car bits for brake-up, and the 8v to 16v or vr6 sticky and I got to wondering...  If i've a AGG 8v GTI (which I have funnily enough), whats the minimum i'd need?  Could I just whack a head on it?  Surely far too simple.

I expect its too much effort and money to seriously consider - but 115 -> 150 (ish) HP sounds nice.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

Loads more differences than just the head.

Ok everything I believe the block is different as well as 16V's have oil jets under the pistons.

head, pistons, block, injection and several bits of wiring are different! (16v uses bosch injection) then the gearbox and its hydraulic clutch

Putting the 16v head onto an 8v block would be a lot of work.

If all the water and oil ways line up (I suppose some variant of the 16v head will line up) you will be lowering the compression ratio because the 16v combustion chamber is larger. You will then probably need to change the pistons or machine the 8v pistons for cutouts for the valves.

You will then need the whole 16v intake system, throttle body, and air box assembly. Crank sprocket and intermediate shaft, oil pump, and crank trigger wheel etc will need to be changed, as well as sensors and probably sensor positions will need to be changed.

ECU and associated wiring will need to be changed.

Then consider changing to the stronger 02A gearbox and either cable clutch conversion or complete hydraulic clutch.

If you wanted to do a turbo conversion it might be a way to go but the loss of compression ratio plus all the work and effort wouldn't really make it worthwhile. It would be loads easier to transplant the complete abf lump into the car.

Probably loads of stuff I've missed in the above as well.

Bloody hell, I was wondering if this swap / upgrade was worthwhile, but reading this makes me think that just selling my 8v AGG and buying a 16v would be much more cost effective....... And less hasstle.

And I like my 8v again since sorting the cutting out problem lol........ Better the devil you know!

A good bit of insight though.......
