Wheeler Dealers

I saw the above programme yesterday on the Mark 1 Golf GTI campaign model
I am a past mark 5 gti owner and wondered has anyone considered importing
a south african Citi Golf and altering to a GTI mark 1 look??
The Citi Golf is a Mark 1 Golf.

I believe that all new Citi Golf's are 5 door and also quite expensive to import. Also Citi wings, bumpers, grill and rear quarters are different, along with interior. Far cheaper to buy a nice original 'proper' MK1 GTI.

Nice mod is to use the citi rear class as it is all clear with no heater element lines, Goes nice with a nice smoothed rear tailgate.

You can only do it if its over 10 years old.

Anything after that needs to be crash test approved so you would need about three cars.

Lots of info about it on vwgolfmk1.org.uk

i too considered this option a long time ago and its not worth it.  Only comes in 5 door and vw made many improvemnts to the orignal shape meaning that there are a lot of parts that are not interchangable.  i would also be suspect on the build quality compared to the original gangsta!

I'm with raffles, you can't have one registered in this country currently for 9+ years due to not having enough information about crash performance etc etc. I guess it maybe possible to get a second hand one which was first registered in S/A in a year or so though
