Some help with several problems please
« on: 13 December 2009, 17:29 »
Hello everyone

I have 3 days ago purchased a 1.8t to run back and forth to work. I knew it had some problems when I purchased it but still have a few questions as I am not familiar with the engine.
The car does need some work but its just has a water pump, oil pump, sump cleaned out including the strainer and lots of stuff. Its a bog standard 1999 1.8t though there are some parts missing and think it has had a non recorded front end bump ~ is the slam panel across the front normally the same colour as the body? as mine is black. The car is straight and I had a 4 wheel alignment to ensure. I knew what I was buying and I was aware that as a 10 year old car its seen so adventure, but this is a run about also a tow car for my track car or fun car.

Firstly when I start the car the will blow in warm air but as I drive it cools back down, then when I stop it has chance to warm up again. I think this is just thermostat.

I opened up the engine bay to have a look round and noticed that by the bonnet catch there is a small micro switch hanging down but I can't see where this little fella goes? any ideas? I think when the front was sprayed something was removed and hence its hanging there.

The next thing which is annoying me is the central locking, it works fine off the key, it opens locks as it should but if I open all the door locks the switch on the drivers side allows me to lock all 5 doors but the passenger and rear passenger pop back up. Not sure why, if I only open the dirvers door and use the switch to lock the doors they all lock and stay locked... Any ideas?

Last question, the precious owner fixed the rear light with red tape "well done" is the GTI lights different to any others?

Thanks in advance for your help, I have tried to use the search where I can. I want to turn this car into a good stock car with all the trimming in place and have spent a good time steam cleaning the recaros ready for the new bolsters which can only be down to some fat person sitting on them. I do wonder how some people can take no care of their cars.

Cheers Richard

Hello mate welcome

The slam panel being black is normal does it look like this??

not sure on the microswitch hanging, has it ever had an aftermarket alarm fitted?

sounds like your thermostat in relation to the temp or poss an airlock what temp is your gauge at?

The GTI lights are smoked

Yes the slam panel is black, that is ok then I am pleased about that

My temp gauge goes up to 80 - 90 when at the lights but as soon as I move the temp goes down to the bottom and the air out of the blowers goes cold.

Looks like I need a smoked drivers lights

Thank you for the help

maybe it's the temperature sensor that clips on the front bumper? got pics?

and I think you need a new thermostat.

I will get an actual picture but it looks like this, but it does look stock.

My alarm does chirp off the stock key fob so there is a chance there has been an alarm fitted. I do not yet know much about this car but I am working on sorting it out

I will have a look at the module to see whats going on. I almost have all the parts I need to strip all the parts off clean and put them back in again.

Found that the passenger side doors do not operate the light when opened so maybe that may have something to do with the doors?
The rear OS window will not go down by using the drivers control so maybe the fault is in that unit...

So many little faults so sort out. looking forward to sorting them all out

Will a 3 button remote pad work on a 2 button car? I need to replace one of the remote keys as its worn badly. any ideas? many searches and I have not really round a yes no answer

Thanks for the help so far.

Ive got the same problem with the doors, have also just recently bought.  The key fob opens the car perfect but doesnt lock it so this has to be done manually.  To get everything to lock I have to press the switch on the door three times get out the car and then lock it manually this works but its a pain. If i just get out an manully lock it the boot nor the passenger doors locks.

Any ideas peeps?
