Mk3 8v engine into mk2 help
« on: 13 December 2009, 09:37 »
Hi i am new to the forum. I have been searching for info on this topic but i can only find info on fitting a mk3 block. I got a mk2 to use as a track car. The car was originally a 1.3 but had been fitted with a 1.8 gti engine. When they fitted the 1.8 they fitted a fuel pump relay away form the fuse box. It ran like this for 18 months until the engine ate itself. The previous owner also destroyed the wiring loom for some reason. I had a mk3 2.0 8v engine, box, loom, ecu, subframe and suspension. I have got the engine fitted into the car and got the wiring all connected up to the engine. I am now struggling with how to connect the wiring to the car. There are a couple of little plugs that route to the fuse box. Can someone help me with this? Also can anybody tell me which wire is the fuel pump supply wire so i can connect it to the fuel pump relay. Thanks for your help.

so are you trying to use the original wiring loom or the mk3 wiring loom?

good choice, now where is the hazard switch on your car, on the dash or on top of the steering column?

right this means the mk3 engine loom will be pretty much plug & play! if you pull the old engine loom out and compare you'll immediately see whats different. then you can choose to either fit MK3 loom as is and modify it to suit, or open both looms and swap wires over to make a for the MK3 engine.

mainly you'll see the fan stuff differs and the location of the outside air temp for mfa, apart from that its very similar.  only other thing is the coil. Since MK3 uses a different rev counter signal, if you want to keep MK2 clocks and have a working rev counter you have 2 choices:
1. fit MK3 coil then open it to add in the rev counter wire
2. take the MK2 coil, TCI-H & loom and splice it to the MK3 engine loom

if you use MK3 clocks then no need to worry!

RJ, me again! im now doing this same conversion on my mk2 (mk1 up for sale :( ),

can you send me some info regarding how to splice mk2 fuel pumps/relay into the mk3 loom, and also how to splice in fan stuff to use mk2 driver rad.

other thing, whats all this rev counter stuff you mentioned? i have the full mk3 loom, and coil, how do i go about adding in the wire for rev counter? is it not already in the mk3 loom? if not where is it and where do i splice it etc!

advice appreciated mate as im doing this over the weekend!

cheers!

Dean

My car doesnt have the mfa computer as it was originally a 1.3. I have the wiring loom fitted to the engine and plugged into the fuse box. The golf has the 1.3 fuse box and when they fitted the 1.8 engine they wired a seperate fuel pump relay. I could just do with knowing which wire is the fuel pump relay supply wire out of the ecu. Cheers
