It depends a fair bit on the colour of the car really. On my battleship grey car you can hardly see the front flaps, on other colours they may look more obvious.
The first ever mk6 GTI I took out for a test drive had flaps all round. The fronts looked fine but the rears looked like Dumbo. The rears probably look okay with wide, low offset alloys to balance the lines out a bit, but on the 17'' Monza equipped car that I tested two and a bit years ago they just didn't look right and took away the sportiness of the car.
