Engine rattle on start-up
« on: 07 December 2009, 16:42 »
Hi Guys,

I have an 06 GTi which i've had for almost a year now. Last april, whilst still under warranty the timing chain, sprocket and tensioner was replaced by VW to cure the dreaded noisy engine and rattle on start-up.

The work was completed about a month before the warranty ended and seemed to solve the problem at the time. About 3 months later the rattle came back, and most notably i have an engine rattle when I start the car. It last for 3-4 seconds and then dies away when the revs drop down to tickover. Its been back to the garage and they say they can't hear anything, although they told me the inlet flap motor was faulty and say they have replaced it as a gesture of goodwill. Is there an easy way of checking this?

The belt needs changing in April when the car is 4 years old, and to me the rattle seems to sound like its related to the timing chain again (which has already been replaced). Is there anything else I should be considering here? I should say the rattle doesn't happen every time i start up, but is possibly occuring progressively more frequently.

All help much appreciated

Mike

Cam belt tensioner could be the problem. Noisey when the engine is cold, but quitens down when it warms up. almost like a weak squeek sound.

Had mine replaced about a month ago with new cambelt under warranty

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the reply. I think with mine its more of a 'mechanical' rattle than a squeak-almost like noisy tappets....but it seems to happen when hot or cold.

Cheers.

Cam roller was a problem on the earlier models. Engine code that was AXX code. Someone will remember about this, causing the engine to Rattle alot more then it normally sounds.
