As said above the very first mk5's did not have an arial at all on the roof its in the back window iirc. later ones got a bee-sting.

Early models didnt come with an arial on the roof and just use the rear heater element as the arial. IMO I think they look better and much cleaner without the arial

I like the shark fin on mine, although as you say none at all would be even better!
